Nothing gives a person so much advantage over another as to
remain always cool and unruffled under all circumstances.
Take advantage of every opportunity to practice
your communication skills so that when important occasions arise,
you will have the gift, the style, the sharpness, the clarity,
and the emotions to affect other people.
Every disadvantage has its advantage.
It is a great advantage for a system of philosophy
to be substantially true.
Always bear in mind that your own resolution
to succeed is more important than any other one thing.
Making your mark on the world is hard.
If it were easy, everybody would do it. But it's not.
It takes patience, it takes commitment,
and it comes with plenty of failure along the way.
The real test is not whether you avoid this failure,
because you won't.
It's whether you let it harden or shame you into inaction,
or whether you learn from it; whether you choose to persevere.
What I must do is all that concerns me, not what the people think.
This rule, equally arduous in actual and intellectual life,
may serve for the whole distinction between greatness and meanness.
It is the harder, because you will always find those who think they
know what is your duty better than you know it.
It is easy in the world to live after the world's opinion;
it is easy in solitude to live after our own;
but the great person is one who in the midst of the crowd keeps
with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude.
Ralph Waldo Emerson
